Stopping cigarettes for the kids

Taking the plunge to swap from cigarettes to e-cigs can be a huge decision, one which I was very hesitant to make, not to mention reluctant. I have been a smoker since the age of 16 when my brother Rick used to buy my fags for me (or rob them if we were both out of pocket). I would sit in the alleyway down the back street behind my house so that my parents didn’t see me. My mum was extremely strict and insisted that no one in the house smoked but it wasn’t due to the health risks. Back in the day, no one was bothered about that. Everywhere you went, a tobacco fuelled smog would find you somewhere. To my mum, it was purely monetary reasons. She said our money was better spent on clothes, shoes and things for the house. This was entirely true, although not what my brother and I wanted to hear.

Anyway, 39 years on and I have kids myself, not to mention grandkids. I smoked the whole time my children were young and when my daughter grew up, she followed in my footsteps but I was never bothered, after all, I had been smoking nearly all my life.

The change came about when my daughter Mel had her son Harry. Mel came to me one day, looked me right in the eye and said, ‘Mum, I need you to stop smoking, please.’

My immediate response was, ‘why?’ and Mel made me aware of the issues with second-hand smoke and how it can affect the development of children. I had no idea. According to statistics, second-hand smoke causes numerous health problems for babies and children, including more frequent and severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Inhaling someone else’s smoke can be just as bad as directly inhaling the cigarette smoke yourself.

Needless to say, I was shocked. The thought had never really crossed my mind and so, I agreed but inside I was wondering how on Earth I would manage to do it.

Mel had already given up smoking for the sake of Harry’s health a month or so early and she explained to me how she had moved on to e-cigarettes. I had seen plenty of them around but I had never taken any notice of them until that point. Mel let me try hers – an Endura T18E Starter Kit which she’d got from a website called She said it cost her £24.99 and at first, I thought it was a lot of money, but since then I have come to realise that it’s actually very reasonable because in the long run, you save a fortune on cigarettes!

I didn’t know how to feel about the transition at first because naturally, it is not the same thing as smoking, however, the feeling is pleasant and I get my nicotine hit from the appropriate e-liquid strengths, not to mention the fact that I get to experiment with flavours!

My favourite e-liquid which I would recommend to anyone is Dinner Lady which comes in all sorts of delicious pudding flavours. It’s definitely worth a try and Mel swears by it too. I’ve noticed other changes in myself as well since I’ve started swapped to vaping, like my skin; everyone says I look so much fresher and I feel fresher too! I don’t smell like fags everywhere I go now as well but best of all is that I know it’s one less thing to worry about with little Harry. When he’s in my company, I know I can do my absolute best for him, always.
